The first application of Salesforce.com was Customer Relationship Management (CRM) as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). Based on the company's needs and requirements this application can be widely adapted or customized and a variety of features can be added.

For example, fields could be added to database tables, validation rules enforced on data, and custom user interface controls embedded on the screen. Such changes and customizations of the application are done on the Force.com platform.

Force.com is specifically designed for business applications, with infrastructure that is uniquely tuned to the needs of these applications. Some examples of this infrastructure include security, user identity, logging, profiling, integration, schema-driven data management, transactions, workflow, and reporting.
